Identifying the Problem
FHI 360 has been implementing global programs for over 30 years. In that time they have produced and accumulated a huge amount of information and resources that were scattered across different offices, teams and software. FHI 360’s Vine was developed as an internal tool to document resources and information on the projects they implement, the countries they operate in, and the procurement activities they conduct.
The product had grown over time without a dedicated UX specialist based on stakeholder demands, developer insights, and unstructured user feedback. Brandon joined the team to help identify and prioritize opportunities for improvement. Kicking off with user interviews he meticulously documented the ways in which users interacted with the tool, where they became confused, and how they thought about Vine’s variety of functions.
Designing the Solution
After creating a report out on the interviews’ findings, Brandon was able to collaborate with the product team to prioritize areas of concern. Where able, Brandon created new flows and updated interfaces to address user concerns. This included…
Creating an onboarding flow to help better inform users of functionality they were missing.
Introducing a sticky side nav on long information dense pages to help manage excessive scrolling.
Consolidating information on a country listing page so more relevant data can be easily seen.
Unifying distinct navigation layouts across what were developed as four separate products (Vine, Country Vine, Reporting Vine, and Procurement Vine) but users viewed as one interconnected tool.
Moved the ability to upload documents into the top bar to address user concerns about not knowing where to complete this task.
